The golden age of film is set for a revival in the South West as multi-Academy Award-winning silent movie THE ARTIST is transformed into a world first stage adaptation which will début at Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Michel Hazanavicius’ 2011 film THE ARTIST captivated audiences across the world more than a decade ago, winning five Academy Awards, seven BAFTAs and three Golden Globe Awards.

Set in 1920s Hollywood, the show has been reimagined from screen to stage by Theatre Royal Plymouth with The McOnie Company and stars international dancer and actor Robbie Fairchild as silent movie icon George Valentin, West End favourite Gary Wilmot as film director Al Zimmer and Briana Craig (42nd Street tour) as rising star Peppy Miller.

Renowned George meets aspiring actress Peppy, but, as Peppy’s career and fame soars, George’s slumps as he refuses to embrace the Talkies revolution. Several themes emerge throughout the story from a young woman finding her voice to a man refusing to change and feeling like there’s no place for him in the world anymore.

Plymouth audiences will be the first to experience the love story that falters as quickly as it begins; a tale that sees careers collide and desperation lead to near-tragedy. Following George as he finds his voice, audiences will watch as love and loyalty prevail and humility is learnt in a dazzling celebration of silent cinema that blends cutting-edge theatre-making with iconic music of the period. The show begins in the physical world of the silent movie era and gradually moves into a musical with costumes and set evolving through the periods.

James Mackenzie-Blackman, Chief Executive and Executive Producer of Theatre Royal Plymouth said: “We can’t wait for our audiences in Plymouth, and beyond, to come and support the show. The world premiere of THE ARTIST, here in Plymouth, is a big deal and part of our ongoing plans for TRP.

“With THE ARTIST, Drew and his hugely talented creative team, have created a truly extraordinary piece of work, breathing new life into this beautiful love story.”

Tickets are on sale now for THE ARTIST at Theatre Royal Plymouth, where the production begins its journey with a strictly limited run from Saturday 11th May until Saturday 25th May 2024.
